LAUGH! by Patrice
The Healing Power of Laughter. Where would we be in these weighty days if it weren’t for some moments of joy-filled laughter?
I love the G.K. Chesterton quote that says, “Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly.” I believe Laughter helps us to take things a little lighter so we can SOAR like the butterflies through this journey God has in store for us. Laughter is truly Good Medicine. “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22.
Did you know there are Giggling Gurus in India, plus hundreds of Laugh Clubs? Because in India, they've learned the Power of Laughter to heal the body of sickness and disease. You can train yourself to laugh in order to heal.
Once my Uncle Zovak, my Mom, and Dad took me with them to a Laugh Workshop! It’s there I learned first-hand how restorative the sound and rhythm of laughter are. And it's free! Each of us is born with this gift. In fact from my reading, I've learned that under the age of five, children laugh at least 300 times a day. Then by the time we are 40, I've read that we laugh only 3 to 20 times a day.
No need to wait for external circumstances to change so you can be grateful, joyful, and laugh. Gratitude, joy, and laughter are intangibles that begin on the inside! Try making a daily list of at least three things for which you’re grateful. Three things that make you feel joy. And try starting a journal of the fun, blessings that make you laugh, including clean jokes. I believe it’s time to include laughter in our own self-care.
My brother is such a blessing to me. No matter what life brings, he always looks for delightful things to say to make my smile turn to giggles. And I have another friend who has the most stand-out, contagious laugh! An hour spent with either of them, and I can always count on releasing any stress hormones that may be weighing me down. Resulting in a flood of happy endorphins and a healthier immune system! Laughter is a Gift we share to lift each other’s spirits, starting with us.
